With onset of spring 2016, Indian Handicrafts Gift Delhi Fair (IHGF) presented four power packed business with over 2750 exhibitors and more than fourteen well defined product segments. In words of Hon. Minister Sh. Santosh Gangwar, MOS for Textiles, handicraft sector from India plays an important role in terms of its contribution to employment, exports and preserving rich Indian cultural heritage.
Though Spring 2016 fair offered a rare opportunity for buyers to pick and choose from a vast variety of traditional and contemporary handicrafts, however, Green design sensibilities from Indian North East region was a special showcase one.
A pleasant mix of bright as well as subdued merchandise with an instant appeal of bamboo, cane craft, home decorative, furnishings, dry flowers and many natural fibre products. The North Eastern Region of India is home to a large number of tribes and sub-tribes who bring into this region’s export basket, natural and handmade products.
Arunachal Pradesh an ambit of crafts including carpet masking, masks, painted wood vessels, bamboo and cane crafts, weaving, wood carving and jewellery besides other miscellaneous crafts like handmade pottery, brass cutting, silver works etc.
Assam depicts the cyclorama of crafts encompassing handloom weaving, cane and bamboo works, sitalpatti work, brass and bell metal work. Handloom weaving comprises the culture of endi, muga and mulberry silk.
Artisans from Manipur in the Spring fair have contributed to the richness and myriads of Indian culture with their peculiar blend of tribal traditions and Vaishnavism. Of the numerous colourful crafts of Manipur, their textiles, strong bell metal bowls, cane and bamboo mats made of spongy reeds can be traced as having rich artistry. Manipur is also well known for its jewellery and toys of straw and clay.
The distinct craftsmanship of Meghalaya is in its cane and bamboo craft. Artistic textile weaving and wood carving is practiced in Garo hills. Silk weaving of endi silk is very famous. Carpet weaving, ornaments, musical instruments are other specialities. But the unique craft of this state is pineapple fibre article in which fibre from its pineapple leaves is utilized for making various types of articles.
Tripura is a home to huge number of tribes, which keep its tradition alive of huge array of crafts, handloom being the most important. The foremost feature of Tripura handloom is vertical and horizontal stripes with scattered embroidery in different colours. It is followed by cane and bamboo craft. The well admired handicraft items are bamboo screens, lamp stands, tablemats , shoal pith, woodcarving, silver ornaments and other crafts that are practiced.
Mizoram significant crafts include weaving, bamboo and cane craft , pipes, jewellery and musical instruments. Weaving is an integral part of Mizo culture while bamboo and cane works are of significant importance.
Sikkim best known crafts are the beautiful hand woven woollen carpets with traditional Sikkimese motifs and uniqueness; hand carved and embellished choktse, hand- made paper and woollen blankets. The fine woollen texture are durable and dyed from traditional vegetable sikkimese dyes.
Nagaland incorporates weaving, basketry, woodwork, products made out of shell and beads. The North-East Indian crafts are made wealthier by the decent crafts of Nagaland generally associated with the religious beliefs and practices.
Thereby, Spring IGHF 2016 heralds an enriching sourcing experience. Multi-faceted innovations, inspirations, newer design developments were the hallmark of themed North East pavilion with buyers from more than sixty countries had marked their attendance and looked forward to replenish the newer era.
